Technical Information - Security

Usernames and passwords are assigned for each user. A mechanism is provided if you wish to use your network security for PRISM so the user doesn't need to remember an additional password. The username and password of the database are kept hidden from the user to ensure data integrity.

The PRISM Enterprise Manager allows you to create roles that manage security with the PRISM software. These roles allow you to restrict certain capabilities with the program if necessary. Some examples of the types of privileges you set are listed below (the list is a partial list of the privileges available).

  • Which columns are viewable and editable

  • Where they are allowed to add records, delete records, edit records, export, merge, etc.

  • What book types they will be allowed to view

  • What book types they will have write access to

  • What books they can delete

  • What projects they have read access to

  • What projects they have write access to

  • If they are permitted to check-out books locally

  • If they are permitted to modify reports and labels

  • If they are allowed to make system administrator changes such as adding new columns

Foreign Language Support

PRISM will display and handle numbers and dates according to the regional settings on the client's machine. For example, a Germany setting would display 1.99 as 1,99 and February 17, 2001 as 17.02.2001.

Since you can define your own columns in PRISM Enterprise Manager, you can define the columns as metric columns if desired.

Multiple User Connections

PRISM is a 32-bit application that can be run on Microsoft® Windows®. A custom spreadsheet interface control was written by CSSI specifically for PRISM to enhance performance. CSSI has participated in the Microsoft Developer Network programs, Oracle Developer programs, and Citrix Partner programs to stay current with changing technology.

PRISM can also be used in a Microsoft Terminal Services (Remote Desktop Connection) environment or with the Citrix® MetaFrame® product. A utility is provided to allow the interactive merge with communication devices to work in this type of environment. For example this utility allows your scales to "talk" with the Citrix server in order for data on the scale to be passed to PRISM running on the Citrix server.

Supported Databases

PRISM supports several databases depending on your needs and infrastructure that may already be in place. The database is hidden from the user so that knowledge of the database is not required. PRISM contains mechanisms to avoid data contention problems between users. The databases that PRISM currently supports are:

  • Microsoft® SQL Server (SQL 2005 or above recommended)

  • SQL Express

  • Oracle® (8.1.7 or above recommended)

Single user systems typically use a SQL Express database.  It is recommended that multiple user systems use a Microsoft® SQL Server database.  Support for Oracle® will end in March 2010.

PC Requirements

PRISM uses memory efficiently and does not require much memory. Your machine should have at least the minimum processor and memory requirements recommended by Microsoft® for the operating system you are using. Windows XP or Vista is recommended.

The PRISM application will need approximately ten megabytes of free disk space. The PRISM help file takes an additional 100 megabytes of disk space (the help file can be placed on a network shared if desired).

If you are a single user with a local database or a multiple user who wishes to use the local check-out features, you will need some additional disk space for the SQL Express  installation and database. The size of the database depends on your data tracking needs.

Server Requirements

Multiple user versions of PRISM are typically implemented with a more powerful database on a server, such as SQL Server.

The server should have at least the minimum processor and memory requirements recommended by Microsoft® for the operating system you are using. The hard drive space required depends on your data tracking needs. Please contact CSSI for an estimate of your database size needs (usually 1 million records takes 1 gigabyte).

A server is not necessary in a single user environment.
